A family, not one specification
When an old cabinet comes through the door, the badge only tells us so much. What drivers are inside? Has someone changed the crossover? What’s been repaired? Those details make a difference. The specifications in a later A7 reissue manual should not be assigned automatically to every vintage Altec cabinet.
Why we keep working with it
We use vintage Altec Lansing cabinets and equipment frequently. Their visual presence and the experience of listening through them are part of what draws us in. The best part is hearing them play in a room full of people again. Getting there means taking the condition and setup seriously.
Care before nostalgia
We’re fond of these systems, but we don’t assume an old speaker will be right for every job. We look at what’s there, what condition it’s in, and where it will be used. Sometimes the woodwork needs attention; sometimes the system needs a different configuration. Usually there’s more to discuss than the finish.
