What Symphony Hall can teach us about sound.

Symphony Hall, Wallace Clement Sabine, and the idea that the room is part of the instrument.

A new home in 1900

Boston’s Symphony Hall opened on October 15, 1900. Architects McKim, Mead & White brought in Harvard physicist Wallace Clement Sabine as an acoustic consultant. Architecture you can hear

The BSO describes shallow side balconies, ceiling recesses, and inward-sloping stage walls as parts of the hall’s acoustic design. Sabine’s work helped predict reverberation before construction. What we like about this story is that someone asked how the room would sound before it was built. That’s still a useful question to ask early.

What we take from that history

A restaurant is not a concert hall, and a speech system should not imitate the reverberation of an orchestral space. We can still ask the same practical question: what do people need to hear here? That gives us somewhere useful to start.

A listening exercise

The next time you visit a performance space, listen during a pause. Notice how sound leaves the room, how clearly you can follow a voice, and how that changes as you move. You do not need to name every effect to become a more observant listener. For a commercial space, we pair those observations with the actual use of the room.
